Synthetic vs Down Puffy Evaluation

Shake-down winter hikes. Near identical circumstances but there was no sun on Sunday and it was 14deg instead of 11deg. I wanted to know if I would be warm enough in my layers, and how sweaty the jackets would get. Didn't realize it on Saturday, but the water bladder was empty. I refilled it with 2 liters for Sunday. Both days I wore the hood from the base layer and I definitely noticed the wind pushing through my knit hat. And both days the water in the hose froze!

  • Saturday
    • REI Revelcloud synthetic jacket
    • 11deg, slight breeze, sunny
    • Water bladder empty
    • Darn tough crew socks
  • Sunday
    • REI Magma down jacket
    • 14deg, slight breeze, cloudy
    • 2L bladder
    • Smartwool over-the-calf socks
  • Common clothing
    • Patagonia tech t-shirt
    • REI fleece midweight hoodie
    • Wool Buff
    • Puffy jacket
    • Motorcycle goggles
    • Hat
    • EMS gloves (not including liner)
  • Under Armour lined wind pants
  • Asolo boots

Synthetic puffy results: surprisingly I was completely comfortable and warm. I should get a hood or shower cap to fight the wind, but overall I was good. I was even more surprised when I got all done and there was no sweat on any layer except my t-shirt - the fleece & puffy were completely dry.

Down puffy results: I wouldn't say I was any warmer or colder, but I also feel the wind cut through the jacket a bit more. I didn't use the hood, but it would have been handy had it been any windier. There was a little sweat that got though the fleece & onto the jacket, but not enough to make the jacket ineffective.

All-in-all, it was a solid, effective test. Nearly an hour outside in sub-freezing temperatures and I was warm enough. I might benefit from some leggings, but it certainly wasn't needed for this, and in the woods the wind would be less, right? The Smartwool socks were fine on the hike, but they were way too warm when I tried to wear them in the house. The Darn Tough socks were also long enough to keep the boots from irritating my ankles and fine in the house. The goggles were sort of useless - I had to be so careful breathing or they got foggy in moments. Maybe real ski goggles would be better?

I'm also rethinking footwear. With the boots I feel so much more protected from everything. One concern is whether or not they affect my Achilles negatively, but for the moment things are okay. I know they're heavier, and if they get wet inside it will take longer to dry, but they also feel so bulletproof when I'm wearing them. Certainly, during cold weather, they're much better than trail shoes.

(6.1 miles) Solo Hike on Crystal Hills Trail - 6 wet & soggy miles

Wore my Salomon boots and due to recent rain and tall grass, feet were soaked as soon as I started. Didn't get any better, and I had to wade through a river near the turn around point so feet were even more wet on the way back. I used the SMD Flight 30 as a bit of a test run and it was comfortable with about 10 pounds in it. Hated going solo, but glad to get outside.

FLT Multi-day hike: 31.46 Miles

Hiked Thursday night to Moss Hill Lean-to. That was a bit more tense than I was expecting - got dark and there were 2 problems: I lost the white blazes twice and the battery on the headlight was draining - I'd forgotten how to lower the lumens output. But in the end I made it to the lean-to. And when I got there I saw a couple eyes staring at me. Not big enough to be a bear, but not a tiny rodent either. Maybe it was a fox? I found in the morning that whoever had been there prior threw their food garbage into the fire pit. The last couple miles of hiking I was certain I'd forgotten the tent stakes but was SOOOO glad that they were in the tent bag when I arrived.
Gear List Here
Also glad I used the skinny titanium set as they fit in the grooves between the floor boards. I set up the tent in the lean-to, I know I'm not supposed to, but I wanted another lay of protection from rodents & scavengers. I hears something run on the shelf in the lean-to and it knocked some acorns and screws onto the floor.

Full day 1 started well, though I could have started sooner. Love this picture below - how often have I seen those large green areas in the hills while driving and wondered what it's like up there? Now I know! Awesome view and a cool memory. There's a lake in the distance - Lamoka, I think.

I did my best to control my pace as I knew I was in for a really long day, and I was very cognizant of water availability. Unfortunately, for the last 5 miles or so, I totally didn't take a break or much of a drink and I certainly overdid it and I really felt it when I arrived at Sugar Hill - the red cheeks, the overheated head. On the bright side, since I hiked too quickly, I got there earlier than expected and had extra time to relax and recover. I napped for an hour after set-up. Eventually I made dinner, popped my 2 small blisters, and just relaxed some more. It was a very windy night and there was some rain, but the MEIR tent held up well, though I definitely wouldn't consider it a full 2-person tent at only 43 inches wide. It will be okay for the boys for a couple years, though. I was so comfortable on just the Z Lite I considered sleeping on just that, but inflated the NEMO Astrolite anyway. It wasn't a good night sleep or very restful. Again, I think that's because I overdid it. I did discover just how comfortable the Adaptor Liner is, though - I should grab another couple of those. It was pretty important, too, as I had developed some chafing and needed to remove the clothes to let everything dry out. It was basically perfect. The 30 deg quilt was a bit much, but at least I wasn't cold.

Saturday ended up being the final day. The blisters had been addressed, but somewhere during the hike my socks got wet inside my shoes. The Leuko tape stayed on to cover the blisters, but the bottom of my right foot was really getting sore. And there was a TON of downhill which created the blisters in the first place. I definitely COULD have continued, but I completed 2 of my 3 goals:
  1. go on a solo hike and not die
  2. complete the previously abandoned attempt from Sugar Hill to Watkins Glen
  3. complete M14 map of the FLT

If I had made it another 4 miles to Burdett I would have completed the M14 map, but there was no place to camp so I'd have to return to Wakins or continue for another 2 or 3 miles. It just didn't seem like the smart thing to do. Given how much I ate, drank, and slept and how slowly I moved Sunday, it was the right call. I made it through Julie's Crossing with no problem as the trail was well beaten. There was a lot more to the WG park then I knew and it was really cool to see. I didn't see anyone else on the trail until I got to the state park. It was cool to be solo, especially as I consciously lowered my pace and stayed as slow as I could and take breaks (or not) as I wanted. But next time a partner might also be fun.

In total I was out from 5:30pm Thursday - 5pm Saturday. It was a solid test of my ability - mental & physical - as well as my gear. The Gregory Zulu pack was comfortable 99% of the time, the tent was  solid during the extreme wind and roomy, the food was good and the cookset worked well, and the sleep system continues to improve. I can't think of much I'd do differently given the setup I had - aside from not carry extra water on Friday, take a set of flip-flops next time, and get some lighter items (already ordered a new 1.5lb tent). Still on the fence about the nalgene bottle. It was good when I wanted to roll out my calves, but it is definitely heavy.

***** NEED AQUA MIRA NEXT TIME AS BACKUP *****

I do need to stretch a lot more next time. It's 2 days later and my hamstrings are still tight despite my Yoga in the morning & stretching during the day.

6 solo miles

Six more miles today. Ended up going solo which was okay since I was pushing to close a loop on the M13 section I'm working on. Bugs still not bad - only had one on me the whole trip. Rain pants are 20 years old and they need to be replaced! I took off the jacket after 1 mile and just used my hat to regulate temperature.

Still Going Strong

Garmin Connect: Still vegetarian and most days, straight-up vegan I think. Loving the chop chop fresh veggie salad I found on Clean Food crush. My L PF has been acting up a bit lately so icing it at home & at work. Need to be ready for Disney!

The day started w/ the usual yoga & ab work (50 situps, 40 leg lifts, 60 sec plank).
I started todays run w/ 3 sets of 20x jumping jacks, 10x squats, 10x lunges, 20x mountain climbers, and 10 shoulder taps. Kept my breathing under control nearly the entire time except going from Engraved up Fox. But I was able to get it back under control pretty quickly. Nice long walk to recover and a relaxing morning so far. Not running fast, but at least I'm running.

Corning dog walk :-)

Garmin Connect
Wanted to walk longer but couldn't fit it into the schedule. Slept great & longer than usual, then stretch, and then a walk. Great morning was crucial since I'll be mostly sitting around during dance recitals for the rest of the day.

Garmin Connect

Garmin Connect. Glad the start the day w/ some stretching. Then I was able to stroll around Elmira for the first time in 15 years while Allison was at the rehearsal for her dance recital on Sunday. We were at the Clemens Center until 9pm Friday night to practice w/ the Elmira studio folks, and had to return today for the Watkins Glen folks (ballet). Eh, it's what you do when you have kids.

Now, last night I was up past 11 working, and no problems today. Brian even woke me at 4am but still I had no trouble waking and felt great all day. My body is confusing myself.

Garmin Connect A nice walk to start the day. Belle was in heaven as she didn't have to be on the leash at all.

Garmin Connect

Garmin Connect: Finally not feeling like crap so very happy to get out w/ the dog this morning. Almost jogged a bit but decided to just keep it slow. BP 125/74 pulse 80.

Garmin Connect - walk

Garmin Connect - Tried to focus on keeping a quick pace & it paid off. Felt nicely winded when I was done. It was a bit breezy which kept me cooler than I would have preferred, but it was probably for the best in the end.

Easy workout

Garmin Connect - very tired this morning but had to walk the dog! ended up doing three sets of lunges and mountain climbers which immediately improved the ankle.

Walk and jog

Garmin connect - a bit sleepy this morning but very happy to get up and moving and even jogging a bit. breathing very hard going uphill felt great. ankle wasn't perfect, but hours late in not feeling any discomfort or pain! I continue to massage it every morning even before getting out of bed and that seems to be working.

Garmin Connect - Walk / Jog

Garmin Connect: Not too breezy to be outside so I had some fun making up a route w/ belle. I got a burr up my butt and decided to jog a little, too. Just a few minutes but at the end of an uphill climb so definitely got the breathing going. I started the day with a long yoga session and this felt pretty good, too. No issue with the heels today but I'll be cooped up in the car tomorrow, driving to a funeral and back so glad to get this in the books. Officially put 100 miles on a pair of sneakers with this one, too :-)

Garmin Connect - Dog Walk

First Yoga, then walking. Can't believe how windy it was - made it much colder than the thermometer said. Jogged for just a minute or two for fun. Hoka Clifton's helped cushion things. I also took a few minutes before getting out of bed and massaged my heels using the balls of my feet and opposite heel. I did it for the last few days and I'll try to keep it up.

Dog Walk

Garmin Connect
Only 27° - I should have worn pants. But I stuck it out and got in a full mile. Need to start putting some pace into these soon.
